The Proposal
Kemi’s story
It was about 12:30 am Dubai time on the 26th of April 2009, we had just arrived from last minute shopping in Bur Dubai where we had Nigerian food. I was really tired and couldn’t wait to sleep after the heavy meal, but since it was our last night Tope decided to order a bottle of French red wine to mark the end of a fun filled/romantic holiday.
We stayed in one of the club rooms on the plush wing (The tower) of Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort & Spa so we could see the sea from our balcony and since our room was on the 10th floor we could also see a bit of Dubai.
Back to the story, anyway on getting to the room I quickly tucked myself into bed and was ready to watch our desert safari DVD, then I noticed Tope was on the balcony so I went out to the balcony to check if he was ok, then we started talking about the trip the, he poured us two glasses of wine, he wrapped his arms around my waist and started to tell me how much he loved me. Tope is a born romantic so I did not even have the slightest clue where the conversation was going.
He then turned me around on our candle lit balcony with the beautiful scenery of Dubai and the sea, and before I realised was he was on one knee and he popped the question
“Folakemi Adetutu will you marry me?”
I just started laughing and I was like
“stop joking and stand up jo, what is all this display about”
and I tried pulling him up but he was like I’m not going to get up until I get an answer from you. It was then I realised he was serious, then he went on to say you better give me an answer now because I’m going to tell our kids mummy made daddy wait for so long before she agreed to marry him.
At that point I thought about a million things all together, but still thought it was a dream, I stood still looking at him, then he was like ok I’m going to start all over again, “Folakemi Adetutu will you marry me”………then came the answer “Yes I will” . Then he slipped the ring on my finger. We had a toast to next phase of our relationship…a lifetime of true love and happiness.
Tope’s story
We went to Dubai on holiday in April 2008 and I had already bought the engagement ring prior to leaving the UK. I was going to propose on the last day we were there so I had to pull off some stunts to hide the ring so she wouldn’t find it.
On the night before we left, we had just come back from a desert safari. I ordered some wine to the room and we were having a drink on the balcony. Then I started to tell her how lucky I felt to be with her and hope that we will be able to have more fun holidays together for years to come and to be specific, for the rest of our lives and then I popped the question
Folakemi Adetutu will you marry me?
I sincerely did not think she was going to say yes and that was one reason I waited till the last day to say it so it did not mess up the holiday. So there were two things that could possibly happen, she was going to say yes and we live happily ever after or she would say no and we fly back home and say at least we had fun in dubai.
What I didn’t think was going to happen was that Folakemi was going to say nothing and leave me there on my knees for almost 20 mins and say nothing. (Ok I sat down after about 5 mins). I guess she was shocked and wasn’t expecting it. It was like writing an exam and waiting for the results to come 2 months later.
She kept asking if I was serious and not making a joke. After about 20 mins, we started all over again. I asked the question, she said yes and the rest is history.
